Spring-sim-newslist -- SPRING surgical simulation news & information

About Spring-sim-newslist
English (USA)

This news list is intended for users and potential users to share information about SPRING Surgical Simulation, an open source software package created by the National Biocomputation Center and SUMMIT, both at Stanford University.

SPRING is a cross-platform simulation engine, using 3-D models of tissues and tools to provide training and experience for medical students.

SPRING supports 3-D interaction using a mouse, haptics devices, and 3-D digitizers and positioning systems. SPRING is designed as a modular set of programs that interacte via TCP/IP connections, allowing one or more users to use SPRING on local computers or on remote compute servers.

SPRING includes a small set of examples that allow the beginner to work with the 3-D world, interacting with simple geometric models.

More advance users may create their own 3-D models of tissues and interact with them using haptic servers that provide force feedback.

Since SPRING's source code is freely available for non-commercial use, advanced users may develop their own scenario modules, extending SPRING code.

Users are also encouraged to report problems, proposed fixes and improvements, and provide
